balloon-popping, parade-raining-on post of the day
1. So wakeupnew linked to a critique of the Diamond Jubilee that went along the lines of “whose Britain is on display here really?” and that made me realize why I absolutely cannot get excited about the Diamond Jubilee (unlike many of my friends and neighbors here in the U.S. South): it looks WAY TOO FUCKING MUCH like the displays I associate with Confederate heritage organizations. Weird nationalism that might actually be regionalism and is absolutely about classism and knowing the right people and moving in the right circles in order to solidify a hold on political structures that oppresses folks lower in the hierarchy.
2. Look: I am generally not a huge fan of people from one state calling shenanigans on the politics of other states. But sometimes it is justified (i.e. slavery, women’s right to personal autonomy and determination over their reproductive destinies). WITH THAT SAID, Wisconsin, please for the love of everything recall Scott Walker. If you do not recall Scott Walker I will be very upset. Also your state will be worse off for decades. He does not like education and he does not like personal autonomy unless you have lots of money that you give to him. Make him go away from your state government, please.
And with that, I’m off to South Georgia to go be in a doublewide and read bell hooks and also eat barbecue because that is how I roll.
